Wonder if I'm from a slightly older generation?
Ernie Clapton
John Williams
Gary Moore
Brian May
Dave Gilmour
Then again, I don't listen to much these days, and from what I do hear, it seems that the day of the guitar vurtuouso has gone.
So, which of Elvis's backing band in the TV advert would you replace, and with who?
Sugababes -> Three Degrees
Sheryl Crowe -> Pino Palladino or Tony Levin (or me)
Jimmy Page -> Ernie Clapton
Noel Gallagher -> Rick Parfitt
Stevie Wonder -> Rick Wakeman
Might keep Keith Moon as drummer or replace him with Phil Collins (Xoanon is now cringing at that last...) _________________ The Lightning: covers

I can't name my 5 greatest British guitarists. Here are 5 really good 'uns, in no particular order:
Jimmy Page, John McGeoch, Johnny Marr, Nick Drake and Andy Partridge. |

In reply to Tauzero's post about the supergroup in that advert...
3 Degrees = Polystyrene, Pauline Murray and Debbie Harry
Cheryl Crowe (bass) = Gaye Advert or Glen Matlock or Alie Mcordie
Guitar = Steve Jones (with a massive white Les Paul)
Guitar = Graham Coxon (with a wicked SG)
Keyboards = (no way)
Saxaphone = (no way, exept in X-Ray Spex records and (West One) Shine On Me) by the Ruts
Drums = Yes, Keith Moon. A true genius and my hero.
Phil Collins? A diminutive and repulsive induvidual who wrote and recorded "Susudio" or whatever it was called. I'd be happy to let the trapdoor open given the chance!! |

For a true synposis of Collins and his evil brethren, go to www.punk77.co.uk
and look at the punk history section. In a way I should feel grateful that his band, amongst others catalised the whole movement, which I love. But, in reality he's still attempting to make music (zero success, ever!) and G*nesis are reforming! I blame sh*tehawks like Razorlight for sucking up to the establishment and opening the door for these B*rks to get back together and torture us all!! It makes me appreciate Arctic Monkeys and The Automatic that little bit more, though, which can't be a bad thing. Cheers! |

But regardless of all that, the chap can drum, though iI'm not so keen on his singing. The Gabriel Genesis was a tremendously accomplished band.
The musician I'd avoid is Jimmy Page, for all those self-indulgent and not very good 25 minute guitar solos... [cat => pigeons] _________________ The Lightning: covers

| I acknowledge that Collins can drum, although perhaps not in the way I like to hear, but is still an utter Berk. And I suppose Genesis were very accomplished....At dressing up as flowers and boring the sh*te out of all and sundry! Mind you, I've got to agree about Page. In fact I watched a 1973 Whistle Test the other night and saw something far worse in the shape of Lynrd Skynrd doing an extended version of Freebird. Complete with "bonus" and much extended guitar solo's from their three (yes, three ) lead "axe men". Over-indulgent, outrageous, wide trousered and unneccassary tripe. But, in saying that, the world would be a bloody boring place if we all agreed about music, eh?! |

| I agree that Jimmy Page was very self indulgent live at times. Having said that, he provided some genius moments on record. Have you heard Communication Breakdown? That is as punk rock as you can get in 1969! Believe me I generally hate unecessary prog clap trap, but I reckon the Zep were something special. |

Rob. I could be wrong, but I thought the Stooges and MC5 were as Punk as you could get in '69? You're even calling Led Zeppelin "Zep"! Why don't you have a bonfire and chuck all your Punk stuff on it? I can't believe you've called Page a genius. He can move his fingers around the frets very fast, but all his ideas came from American blues artists, he just cranked up the volume and played it faster. Like Steve Jones, really! The difference being that Led Zeppelin happened and were good, the Pistols had to happen and were great! But as per my last post, music wouldn't be interesting if we all liked the same thing and didn't argue about what's best! |
