Embarassed I'm not sure I did mate. The couple I watched totally overwhelmed and shocked me with folk, early Roxy Music, Lynrd Bloody Skynrd and a host of other perculiar 70's wide-trousered lunatics. The modern music fan is totally spoiled for choice when you consider that back then, the only proper music programmes were TOTP's and TOGWT! And until I watched the doc, I hadn't realised that TOGWT ignored Punk bands totally until 1978, when there weren't actually any Punk bands left as such! Still, it's great entertainment watching those archives, I'd love to see The Tube re-run next by Ch4....And of course, Cheggars Plays Pop!!

Rob, I am (as you know ) completely aware of the Stooges and MC5. The Stooges were visionaries and MC5 were over rated old cack.

Rolling Eyes Rob, as you are aware, the Stooges and MC5 preceeded Punk and were infuences on it. Led Zeppelin also preceeded Punk, but weren't influential at all in the movement's birth. How British and Am*rican "punk" can be compared is beyond me, as I personally consider the (early )Who to be a real punk band in the true sense of the word, and definately NOT any of the Am*rican shite...

Hi all,

My 10 best guitar inovators are (in no order):

4. Bernard Butler - Suede/Solo
5. George Harrison - The Beatles/Cream/Solo/ The Wilburys
6. Jonny Marr - The Smiths
7. Pete Townsend - The Who
8. Robbie Krieger - The Doors
9. John Cale - The Velvet Underground
10. Jimmy Hendrix

But I suppose the best guitarists are (in no order):

1. Jimmy Hendrix
2. Carlos Santana
3. Pierre Bensusan

Wink

Top guitarists eh. Let me think. Oh, alright, here's my top 10.

1. Jimi Hendrix (Inovation that everyone follows)
2. Eric Clapton (Old slowhand really was/is God)
3. Toni Iomi (spelling was never my best subject)
4. George Harrison (Just because he was a Beatle)
5. Les Paul (He played em and made em)
6. Randy Rhoads (Oh Ozzy)
7. B. B. King (The best blues guitarist ever)
8. Paul Weller (I always like Jam on toast)
9. James Taylor (A magic player/finger picking)
10. Pete Townshend (A powerhouse)

Jase from Wolfsbane is up there to. Not quite into top 10 but close.

After forgetting about this thread for months,here`s my personal top picks;
1/ Hendrix- as much for fusing rock/soul/funk into such a great package, than the guitar pyrotechnics.
2/ Angus Young-AC/DC- it was seeing DC play at Brum Odeon-Sep.80 that got me into playing guitar. How he could play that well, and at great speed, while doing a great impression of a tasmanian devil onstage, was mind-blowing!.(a big shout for malcolm young n all)
3/ Bill Nelson- Be Bop Deluxe and solo. An underrated quiet genius of the guitar. His `tribute to Hendrix` Crying to the Sky` off the `76 album `Sunburst Finish`,is a real tour de force.
4/ Tony Iommi- King of the H.Metal Riff.
5/ Clapton- At his fiery best in Cream, not so good since, but still better than most.
After that,i tend to like the odd riff or 3 from Joe Walsh,Roye Allbrighton of Nektar,Captain Sensible/The Damned/Alex Lifeson-Rush/Pat Thrall(Automatic Man stuff), Michael Schenker, Ed O`Brien and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead,Gaz Coombes from Supergrass,Graham Coxon`s Blur stuff and others.

Very Happy Bloody hell Muz, that's an eclectic mix! You missed Paul Simon off though, and that would have covered nearly all genres! Nice to see Coxon appear on everyone's lists, regardless of their "prevailing musical tastes". He can do the lot. You're a lucky man seeing AC/DC in 1980 in a small venue. As you can tell by my posts, I like Punk, but AC/DC are beyond any movement, and it should be a criminal offence not to like at least some of their music!!

Yeah, reckon you`re right there Rob.Never ceases to amaze me how `Back In Black` can shift any gig/party up a gear. The Skull Club being a good example.I mean the track and not the whole album, obviously!.
I was tempted to name a few acoustic players on the list, but there`s THAT many that I hear, where I like bits and bobs,I didn`t bother.Having said that though, the bloke in I Am Kloot(think it`s Arnold Bramwell or similiar),is very good.As well as John Renbourne and Bert Jansch on the Pentangle stuff.Paul Simon?.yeah why not, never heard a Simon&Garfunkle track that I didn`t like.
P.s- Sad to hear of Paul Fox`s death, heard the two(?) album`s of The Ruts a bit back, and I`d forgotten how good they and he was. He was a mighty fine player.Mindya, anyone that comes up with a monster riff like `Babylon`s Burning`,deserves a place in any hall of fame!.

my top guitarists....in no particular order
julian bream
martin carthy
andy summers
frank zappa
john williams
rossi and parfitt

i am unable to join the punk debate.i'm prog and i'm so ashamed !.all that noisy stuff was kicking off and completely missed me,i'm afraid.
i STILL like prog.as you can imagine i'm terminally uncool.
i did, however, like the police and the pogues and men at work (!)
my uncle barry was a punk,he had green hair and safety pins etc.he was always getting into fights and my nice little choirboy life was much safer.
